What is Truth?

This question is often asked, and the answer pursued, in the areas of philosophy or religion. One need not be discouraged by the plethora of religions claiming a hold on truth. Their many voices do not negate the reality of truth; rather, it helps to establish that there is truth. Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, French author from the 16th century, has well said, "If falsehood, like truth, had but one face, we would be more on equal terms. For we would consider the contrary of what the liar said to be certain. But the opposite of truth has a hundred thousand faces and an infinite field."

Neither need we throw up our hands in despair, embrace the thought that says "truth is relative," or fall prey to the teaching that "it may be true for you, but not for me." To adopt this thinking is to follow the flawed understanding of the man who said, "there is no such thing as truth." Adolph Hitler himself arrived at this conclusion, and history has recorded the evil that emanated from him and his philosophy.

The answer is for each of us to strive for the resolve as expressed by Aristotle when he said, "the high-minded man must care more for the truth than for what people think." Family, friends, and religious bed-fellows must fall by the wayside in our pursuit of truth.

The challenge of this site is for you to consider your own beliefs whatever they might be and inspect them in light of the Word of God. Jesus challenged, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." (John 5:39) His claim is that He is not only the Messiah of Israel, fulfilling the promises of the Jewish Scriptures about the Messiah, but the Savior of the world and the giver of eternal life. Jesus also declared, "... I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6) The Bible claims that it is truth. Come to the place of acknowledging where you are in error in light of the truth of the Bible. And finally, follow truth - believe it - no matter where it takes you. It will make you free!!! To those who believe, Jesus promised, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).
